[Will add photos to this post soon]
Started the walk from a house near Rhosneigwl under low grey cloud across very saturated ground. Passed the skeleton of an old house with a skeleton of a sheep beside it. Maybe I’m getting near to Hell’s Mouth itself! The path crossed many wet fields to the Afon Soch (River Soch) which gives the town of Abersoch it’s name. I then walked on the south-west side of the river across more fields to the Pont Towyn bridge. From here the path follows the road towards the beach at Porth Neigwl. I have noticed new born lambs on my previous walks but there were a lot here in little groups playing king of the castle and randomly jumping in the air – very cute. The path heads towards the south-east end of Hell’s Mouth and I stopped for a bit of lunch by a ruined house next to the path. Shortly after this point I reached a bit where the path had been damaged and I was forced to descend a bit to the beach and cross a stream. There were a group of workers nearby and my guess is that they were preparing to build an alternative path bypassing the damaged section. Crossing the stream was a bit tricky. I had to use several wobbly rocks as stepping stones but managed to cross without getting my feet wet. The forecast had been for sunny intervals but they hadn’t materialised so far. Annoyingly, I could see Snowdonia in the distance bathed in sunlight and lots of little patches of light on the sea.
At the end of Hell’s Mouth I walked around the Mynydd Cilan headland and stopped again to eat at the triangulation pillar. Continuing on around the headland I walked north and then east along Porth Ceiriad. I met a lady here who was chatting by phone to her sister further up the hill. She told me that her sister had found a black lamb on the wrong side of the fence and was trying to get it back into the field with the other sheep. She managed to get it into a field and it ran off towards the sea and disappeared from view. The sisters were Wendy and Dawn and they had been running along the path training for an event called She Ultra 50K. It’s the world’s largest all female ultra marathon event and the next takes place on April 11th 2026. The run is from Abersoch to Pwllheli and is raising funds for women’s cancer research so why not go along and support it if you’re in the area. I wish Wendy and Dawn the best of luck for the race.
The path continued on past some old mine workings and then through a golf course to Abersoch were I was going to have to wait for about 2 hours for the next bus. I finished the walk a bit earlier than expected though and I saw a bus at the end of the road. Some school children had got off and it started to pull away but they saw me running and banged on the door to get the driver to stop which he did. A Sliding Doors moment! Got home a lot earlier thanks to the kids.
